Book Award Winners...How are they Chosen Anyway?

How good is, is purely subjective in my mind, anyway. There's a ton of books I love that will never win any awards and some I hate that take away all the awards. One thing is for certain, having won a few of the big awards, it doesn't do a hell of a lot for sales. But it's a nice thing to have in your bio.
